Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates was opened in October of 1966 by George and Peg Donaldson.  They purchased the business, which was then known as Callane’s Finer Candies, from Charles and Eva Callane.  Since taking ownership, George and Peg Donaldson more than doubled the Callane’s original recipes and expanded into chocolate molds.  All the recipes still remain a family secret!

The store was originally located in an old, two-room school house, roughly one mile north of Lebanon.  When I-65 was built between Indianapolis and Chicago in 1972, it brought along the perfect opportunity to relocate.  Being closer to the interchange would make the shop more accessible to customers.  The store’s current site was purchased, and after much remodeling, was opened in 1973 and became known as Donaldson’s Country Home Candies.

There have been two additions to the current location.  An office was added in the late 1970s, and in 1989, the purchase of an enrobing machine created the need for more space, so an area for the enrober and a cold-storage room were constructed.  Also in 1989, the name of Donaldson’s Country Home Candies was changed to Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates, which created the need for a new box design that is still used today.  An image of a cocoa tree adorns the tradition-style Donaldson’s box, symbolizing the magnificent heritage of chocolate.

In 2010, George’s oldest son, Bob, joined the business.  Bob’s wife, Kathy, soon followed in 2013.  Bob and Kathy expanded the company’s website presence, improved the on-line shipping business, and developed several new product lines including “Donaldson’s Dark Select,” which is noted for its rich, 64% cocoa dark chocolate.
